Welcome to
The Dunkard Creek
Watershed Association
Upcoming Events:
Watershed meeting, Sept. 27, 2008 -- presentation about West Nile Virus; Mason-Dixon hike scheduled.
- The Dunkard Creek Watershed Association will hold its regular meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, in the Red Barn at Mason-Dixon Park. Dustin Teegarden of Greene County, Pa., will give a presentation on West Nile Virus.
- Pete Zapadka of exploretheline.com will
conduct
a hike Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, to the third and last crossing of
Dunkard Creek by Mason and Dixon. This is the approximate location
where the Native Americans told Mason and Dixon they
could not go "one step farther westward." Gather before 11 a.m. at the
parking lot at the Red Barn at Mason-Dixon Park. This is the 241st
anniversary of the forced ending of the Mason-Dixon survey.
The Dunkard Creek Watershed Association, Inc. (DCWA), is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) W.Va. corporation formed in 1995 by local citizens with help from the W.Va. Dept. of Environmental Protection (WVDEP). The DCWA is made up of volunteers and open to the public, especially people who live in the 150,000-acre Dunkard Creek watershed, shown on the home page map.
Headquarters is at Mason-Dixon Historical Park, which is owned by Monongalia County and Greene County. The watershed is divided almost equally in half by the famous Mason-Dixon Line. Brown's Hill on the park property is a national historic landmark, where their Indian guides told Mason and Dixon they would have to turn back without finishing the last 22 miles of their survey.
The DCWA promotes the historic and environmental importance of the beautiful Dunkard Creek watershed and especially the creek itself, because it is the heart of the community at large and a recreational resource for the past 200 years.
Meetings are announced and published in newspapers. If you want to receive watershed news about meetings, projects, and information that impacts the watershed, such as mining and government programs, send an e-mail to betty@dunkardcreek.org and you'll be added to our address list.
